Dorothy Couzens

Animal Portraits in media to suit.

My name is Dorothy Couzens, and I have lived in this area for about 14 years, after my husband retired. I have been painting most of my life in various mediums; painting portraits from life, still lives and flower painting mostly, with an occasional animal painting as well. I have studied for a degree with Open University in the Arts, and have also done three painting courses and a watercolour one with the Open College of the Arts, I have won several awards for my work here, and in Hampshire, where we used to live.

Recently, after being asked to paint a friend's two dogs, in one picture, (which was done in oils), I have developed an interest in animal painting, and have painted a number of commissioned works. These have been mainly dogs from photographs, which I first draw to get the feel of the animal before committing myself to the painting in whichever medium chosen. I believe drawing first helps make the picture less set looking.

Apart from dogs, I have painted cats, and a rabbit, and am in the process of painting two curly-haired poodles together in one picture, in pen and watercolour.
